The Opacity of Truth:

I love you very very very very very very much.

These are the words of Nargis, the 26-year-old wife of Ehtesham, from one of her many love letters to him, almost all that remains of a beautiful young woman who was so in love with her husband, before she and her two young children were killed in a so-called “honor” killing by her very own mother. She had been called to the bedside of her dying mother in an unthinkable ploy – and then forced to watch her 4-year-old son and 18-month-old daughter be thrown from the roof before being brutally murdered herself, the young family then left hastily buried in a field, with the murder pinned on Ehtesham and his two brothers. Nargis’ crime had been to fall in love and marry a taxi driver, a shame for her wealthy family, and among the family members involved in her murder was the man who was promised her sister as his bride in payment. After four months of torture, Ehtesham and his brothers were released from custody, and Nargis’ family apprehended. Ehtesham could finally return to their home to collect their few meager possessions and sob inconsolably.
